ENGLAND

South & Southwest

South England includes the areas of Wessex, Devon, Cornwall, the Downs and the Channel Coast. Devon and Cornwall form a peninsula stopping at the aptly named Lands End. Such well-known cities such as Dartmoor, Exeter, Penzance, and Plymouth are to be found here. St. Michael’s Mount, which resembles Mont Ste. Michel in France, was named so for that reason. This fortress is now a magnificent house that is open to visitors most of the year. Ruins of famous English castles abound in the area as well; Tintagel and Corfe castles are just a few.

SOUTHWEST LONDON

If English gardens are your thing, be sure to visit Stourhead, one of the finest examples of 18th century landscape gardening in all of Britain. And finally, Bath Spa, or just Bath is a magnificent Georgian town. The Romans discovered the 115 degree waters and built an ornate bathing complex around them. In the 18th century the baths were re-discovered and drew wealthy people from London to experience the cure. Bath is beautiful and its golden stonework reminds one of the Cotswolds, nearby to the north.

The Downs and Channel coast offer more English Castles and Cathedrals and the Royal Pavilion of Brighton. Winchester Cathedral and Canterbury Cathedral are located here. Winchester Cathedral, a former Benedictine Monastery, is the final resting place for novelist Jane Austin. Canterbury Cathedral, a medieval masterpiece, is where Thomas a Becket was murdered; it now houses his remains in a shrine dedicated to him. Brighton has been a popular resort ever since the Prince Regent built the Oriental Palace known as the Royal Pavilion, which was completed in 1822.

Wessex is an important microcosm of England and deserves to be included in your England vacation. Stonehenge is located in the heart of Wessex, near Salisbury. Founded in 1220, Salisbury is proud of its stunning cathedral whose graceful spire rises to 404 feet making it visible for miles. Cheddar Gorge is a deep ravine that cuts through the Mendip Plateau, providing the perfect climate to produce Cheddar cheese.
